Libraries may want to use equipment they already own as the hardware basis for an Odyssey system. This can often make good economic sense. A reasonably modern server may be fine as is, or can be made fine with only nominal upgrading. Recently purchased PCs can usually be integrated into an Odyssey system by simply loading a new operating system and application set.
It is sometimes possible to make older PCs function as thin clients. This is generally not advisable as it foregoes most of the advantages thin clients provide and may be as expensive or more expensive than simply replacing them with real thin clients.
StackWood Partners can evaluate the equipment a library has and advise on an appropriate plan for using owned equipment in an Odyssey system.
Depending on the circumstances, several courses of action are possible. StackWood Partners may simply ship software to the library which they or their local service organization can install on the server and PCs. If hardware upgrades are needed they can also be accomplished locally. StackWood Partners will provide phone assistance to people installing the software should they encounter any difficulty. Once the system components are operational and the server is connected to the Internet, StackWood Partners will download the Process Management Software and remotely configure the system to ready it for operation.
