An Odyssey system helps control costs in a variety of ways:
Server Based Computing is a more effective use of computing resources. Modern PCs have far more power than is needed for most of the work they do. The heavy loads come when applications are first loaded or when large graphic images are being processed. Most users do these things, but only once in a while. As long as they don't all to try and do them at the same time no single user will even know they are using a shared machine. One powerfull server can easily do the work of 25 individual PCs, at no more than 3 or 4 times the cost of one PC.
Process Management software can help a library reduce costs by freeing up library staff from being PC proctors. They are now free to do other jobs. Print Job management also plays a key roll in cost control. It can perform two functions. The first is reducing the use of paper, toner, and printer wear and tear, just by being there. Most patrons won't print out the 100 page cookbook the just downloaded from the web when al they really want is a single recipe, IF THEY ARE AWARE. PJM makes sure they are aware. For library's that charge for the use of printing resources, the way most do for copy machine resources PJM enforces the payment policy.
Replacing PCs with thin clients can dramatically effect a library's power bill. They typically draw 1/4 of the electrical power a PC requires. In addition, because the radiate so much less heat into the environment, they reduce air conditiong loads. Thin clients also have far fewer moving parts than PCs, diving maintence cost way below those of PCs.
